SXU football wins MSFA-Mideast Champsionship!

By Mark Siefert

Welcome Back to the Cougar Den!

What an exciting week and weekend we have had here at SXU. I think this is the most excited I’ve seen campus in a long time, and that comes from all the students and staff who are wearing their Cougar pride on their sleeves. Here are some of my thoughts and ramblings from this past week.

  • First off, congratulations to the football team for its first 11-0 season and first MSFA-Mideast Championship. The game was intense, and CBS, FOX and Comcast covered the victory for those of you who missed it.
  • Thank you to all the fans who made the three hour trip out to Ft. Wayne this past Saturday. You saw one hell of a game, and I personally know that every football player appreciated your support. Especially those who went on the fan bus, you are real true blue Cougar fans.
  • Hats off to our Sports Information Director Rob Huizenga, and Executive Director of Media Relations Jay Foot on getting two spectacular specials on quarterback Anthony Kropp and linebacker Mike Lally on the air. Also, the highlights videos were awesome. This is the first time I can remember an SXU video highlight on the air. The closet thing I remember is when we had our name go across the bottom line of ESPN when we played a D1 school in basketball.
  • I have newfound appreciation for all mascots. For those of you who don’t know, I took the responsibility of being Champ the Cougar at last week’s game, and let me tell you it is not as easy as it looks. Not only did I lose about 15 lbs of water weight (Not complaining. It was well needed), but I couldn’t move my neck after holding that head up.
  • Congratulations to the women’s cross country team on a CCAC championship this last weekend. Key contributors were Mandy Jonosz, Kelly Malone, Amy Poull and Lauren Dentzman. Good luck lady Cougars as you travel to Washington for the national meet.
  • Good job on the hot start for our Men’s and Women’s basketball team. Both teams won this past weekend and as we all know the key to a good season is a good start.
  • Congratulations to the Men’s Soccer team on earning a No.2 seed in this weekend’s CCAC tournament. With that ranking they will receive a first round bye into the second round where they will face someone Saturday at 1 here on the campus of SXU.
  • Kudos to John O’brien and Jayson Koehn who were named NAIA baseball preseason All-Americans this past week.
Well, that’s all I have to ramble on about this week. Stay tuned next week as I will give a special preview to the opening round football playoff game.

Stay classy, Cougars.
