Welcome back!

By Brittany Jones

Welcome back to school everyone! I hope everyone’s classes started well and not too many teachers kept you for the whole hour during your first classes. (I hate when they do that… it’s like “come on, it’s the first day!”) A lot has been going on here on campus while you all were relaxing in front of the Christmas tree.

First of all, the basketball teams were stuck here practicing and playing all break. As of coming back, the Women’s basketball team was still undefeated at 17-0. The program has never been undefeated at this point. We are ranked #2 in the nation, and have beaten the #1 team Union Tennessee. That’s why it was devastating Tuesday to lose to our unranked conference rival University of Saint Francis.

With the loss of our all-American guard Kathlyn McClain to a broken nose, and an absolutely ice cold shooting night in the first half, we were down 19 at the half. We showed character with a great comeback to bring it within 3 points in the last minute. The deficit proved too big though, bringing us to 17-1. Not to worry because we plan on going 12-0 for the rest of the season and still holding a great position going into nationals. This could be a historic year for the program, so please come out and support us!

Chartwells also was hard at work with SXU administration to make some improvements on campus. It is no secret that campus food service needed some work last semester. Some good news is the build your own salad bar is back! So you go right ahead and have a side salad instead of a huge one. Some may be bummed about the loss of Maurice’s, but it will benefit the school’s financial situation and in turn help the students.

Lastly, the Student Government Association is looking into making Rhubarbs more like a convenience store. I have high hopes for this because then quad students would no longer have to spend cash on essentials like toilet paper and toothpaste! Wish us luck.
Come support your women’s and men’s basketball teams and raise money for victims of the Haiti earthquake on Saturday at the Shannon Center. The women play at 1 p.m. and the boys play right after.

The American Red Cross club and SGA have teamed together to try and raise money for Haiti at these games. Bring some of your change and donate it because for every dollar we raise at the game, SGA is going to donate 50 cents up to $100! Hope to see you all there!
