What a sports weekend we have just witnessed! From the local level up to the pros, this has been just unbelievable for sports fans.

The Super Bowl game was outstanding, and was, in my opinion, one of the best of the past 10 years.

There also were many outstanding college basketball games on Saturday, from the Big East to the Big Ten, and the talent and close games were spectacular. The only problem after a great weekend like that is Monday.

So that’s why I was moved to Monday’s and I can be your Monday Morning Quarterback and round up and throw out some sports nuggets for anything you may have missed on the weekend or last week.

  • Huge win on Saturday for the No. 3 ranked SXU women’s basketball team. Clutch free throws down the stretch and great all-around play led them to an 83-78 victory over previous league leader St. Francis. With that win, the Cougars hold their destiny in their own hands, and hold the tie breakers over St. Francis. The Lady Cougars have to win out and then they will get home court advantage all the way through the conference playoffs.
  • The Men’s basketball team trounced the visiting St. Francis with a 30-point win.
The men are just one game back in the win column behind Olivet Nazarene, who happen to be visiting the Shannon Center at 7 p.m. tomorrow, Feb. 9 for a match up of two of the best teams in the CCAC. Please show up and give the guys some support. It should be a great game and a win could catapult the team to a conference tournament win.
  • Women’s cross country continues its winning ways with the DMR team qualifying for Nationals in Jackson, Tenn. They head to IWU this weekend and should qualify a few more people and teams in what seems to be one of the better Cross Country teams ever.
  • The football team received a few honors this post-season with eight men making the College Fanz All-American team; leading the way on the first team were Mike Lally, Bill McKeon, and Matt Renfro. Also, every time I check the website it seems like Coach Fem has signed another recruit and with D1 National Signing day last week he should be getting a few more falling through the cracks. It seems like next years Cougars will be knocking on the same doors this team was.
I hope no one will forget to come out and see our men take on Olivet in a conference clash, and don’t forget to support all SXU athletics.

Stay Classy, Cougars!
