Fitness Time!

By Anthony Maziur

Well, it’s that time of the year again. The warm weather and swimsuits are gone and the jackets and sweats are taken out. We are also closing in on the time when people are forced back inside if they want to exercise. It is nice to be able to go out for a run or go to the beach and play volleyball, but what does one do in the cold weather? A great place that people may not know much about, but is a good atmosphere to exercise is the Shannon Center. For students, it is free to use all year and they have tons to offer students in terms of exercise options.

First is the weight room. There is a variety of equipment available ranging from free weights, to elliptical, treadmills, bikes, and Stairmasters. There is plenty of room to work out, and is a very clean and nicely kept gym. The people who work there are very friendly, knowledgeable, and approachable as well. I work in the Shannon Center on the weekends with my girlfriend, and we love helping people with fitness questions. Feel free to stop us and ask anything you want. Look for Anthony Maziur and Danielle Wagner.

First time in the gym??? Not a problem. Danielle also runs the fitness orientations in there. Sign up at the front desk when you walk in. She is very knowledgeable, and very fun to work with. She offers high energy, fun sessions. Another helpful person is Austin Schroeder. He is a certified NASM personal trainer who works out of the Shannon Center. You can pick up his card at the front desk. The weight room isn’t the only thing they offer!

Upstairs, there is an indoor track that you can run on, a separate abs section off the side of the track, and a dance studio for a variety of exercise options. The Shannon Center also offers classes for different fitness sessions that are free as well. Some include pilates, boot camp, and aerobics. The basketball and racquetball courts are also available for use. On top of this, the Shannon Center also hosts a variety of intramurals to students. They are fun, competitive, and an overall enjoyable time. So for those of you that are looking for somewhere fun to work out, or be more active during the winter months, the Shannon Center is the place for you. I hope to see you all in there and feel free to say hey, and don’t hesitate if you have any questions. I actually need to lift now, so off to the Shannon Center I go!

If you ain’t first, you’re last!
