Leaderships Positions, Take One!

By Sydney Bennett

It is the season of leadership applying and interviews for students here at Saint Xavier! Although we are still in the Spring Semester, decisions about next Fall are being made daily. As students we find ourselves in a few places. We’re in a very defining place with our current courses, the weather is nice so we’re getting summer fever, and we have to make housing, class, and potential position choices. It’s a busy time!

I wanted to share a little about some of the leadership positions Saint Xavier offers, the benefits, and a few I’ve experienced.

Saint X offers so many opportunities to gain leadership experience and because it’s such a small school there’s more of a chance to take one if you’d like. With Campus Life there are various positions you can take for a club of your pick. You can even start your own club! For two semesters, I was President of a spiritual organization and pretty nervous about having the position. However, it has helped in so many ways learning how to work with others and get over fear. It has also served as a Resume’ builder and showcased skills that I didn’t even know I had!

There are other positions with Residence Life, like Residents Assistants and Resident Peer Ministers. For the Fall, I applied to be a Resident Peer Minister because encouraging others is a passion, I like being creative, and quite frankly it’s a job! That’s another reason to take a leadership position; a lot of them pay some type of stipend. We all know that as college students any income we can get is great. There are other opportunities to be tutors for Residence Life or the Learning and Disability Center. SSP, also has a mentoring position if you are a part of that organization. I am thinking about applying to that one for next semester! There is a position to be a mentor for freshmen, called a Transitions mentor that I had last year. It’s so rewarding and fun to help freshmen students get used to college life. Another reason to apply for leadership positions is because it helps you meet others and make friends that you would have never met before. I have to be honest; a lot of the current freshmen students are like foreigners to me. One of my friends who is also a junior knows all the freshmen students because she is in a RA.

In addition to all of those positions, the school offers internships and other jobs. Even writing for this blog is considered a leadership position. If you’re interested in learning more, visit each core office to see what positions they hire for. You can also check out CougarJobs to find positions. I highly encourage taking one leadership position during your time at Saint Xavier. Those are often what make the difference of how enjoyable and beneficial your time spent here will be!
