Baseball Time

By Anthony Maziur

Hello again everybody! As the weather is getting warmer and the snow is starting to melt, a certain season is approaching quickly. The SXU baseball team has been rigorously preparing to start the 2011 baseball season. We have been in the gym practicing six days a week to prepare for our much needed start to our season. The team will kick off the season with a trip to Winterhaven, Florida. There we will play 15 games in 9 days against some of the top teams from around the country. This year’s team has a lot up in the air right now in regards to who will step up and take over many of the important roles on the team. After having a senior dominated team last year, we bring in 9 new players, 8 of them being freshmen.

This will be a tough challenge for the coaching staff as to preparing these young players to adapt to the speed of the college game. They have all been working extremely hard to learn our style of baseball and to know the plays that we run. Although the team is very young, we are also very talented. We look to compete right away down there and start off the season on the right foot by having a successful spring trip. The season opener is on Saturday, February 26th against Gannon University. The weekend after spring break the team will travel to Ohio to play a weekend series against Mount Vernon Nazarene University. Then on March 18th, the Cougars will have their home opener at 3:30pm against Calumet College of St. Joseph’s. We look forward to seeing everyone out there to support our team. Enjoy the nice weather and see you next week!

If you ain’t first, you’re last!
