Hey, fellow Cougars!

By Genevieve Buthod

Hey, fellow Cougars! I’m Genevieve, and I am loving my first year here at SXU. I’ll be honest; it was a pretty tough decision for me, as far as where I would end up going to college. I’m from St. Louis, and all I knew when I started looking at schools was that I wanted to get away from home. I visited and applied to schools in Portland, Denver, D.C., and the Bronx (and SLU, just to be safe). I had no idea I would end up here, but I’m so glad I did. I absolutely love new, big cities, and Chicago is such a great place for me.

My first semester here has consisted of plenty of hard work and exhaustion so far, but also a good bit of time exploring the city. I’ve spent so much time going to new parts of Chicago and meeting people, and even after only a couple of months here, I’m starting to really feel at home. I love all of the little neighborhoods next to the commercial areas; I guess I’m kind of a dork for architectural distinctions. Being from St. Louis, I’m definitely accustomed to being immersed in a somewhat international community, but everything here is so much bigger and more varied here. I can’t wait to see “little India” up by Loyola next weekend, and I’m planning on hitting the flea markets in little Italy soon, too.

Being a freshman at this university is certainly challenging, but maybe I’m just experiencing the trials of my first year in the computer science program. I can’t lie, I love a challenge, and I’m actually already considering the computer science masters program at Saint Xavier. Speaking of, I think I need to go to class soon…I should probably get out of here.
See you all next week!
